PA Electric Rate Hike June 2025

Pennsylvania electric prices increased in June 2025.

By locking in your electricity generation costs through a home solar system, you can shield yourself from these rising and unpredictable electricity prices.

Here's what just happened to your electric bill (hint - it went up)

Published "Price To Compare" increases June 2025

  • Met-Ed            8.10%
  • Penelec          5.05%
  • Penn Power  6.17%
  • West Penn    8.82%
  • PPL                15.97%

Price to Compare is only part of your bill, the "Generation and Transmission" cost of electricity, and you can shop around for generation providers.

The utilities also add unavoidable "Distribution" charges, which can be another 5 to 9 cents per kWh on top of the Price to Compare.

Didn't electricity prices increase in January?

Why did rates go up again?

This is primarily due to a significant surge in the regional capacity prices determined by PJM Interconnection, the organization that manages the electric grid in our area. These capacity prices, which ensure there's enough power supply to meet demand, increased dramatically – more than 800% higher than the previous year! This jump is influenced by factors like increased energy usage, the retirement of some power plants, and new market regulations.

This situation creates a significant advantage for homeowners considering or already using solar power. Many solar proposals offer homeowners a chance to lock in low rates, often between 7 and 10 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) as measured by a Levelized Cost of Electricy (LCOE).

To illustrate, if your household uses around 1,000 kWh monthly and the grid price climbs to 15 cents/kWh, a solar customer with an 8 cent/kWh LCOE would save approximately $70 each month ($150 vs $80). These savings become even more substantial as traditional electricity costs increase, making home solar with a stable LCOE an increasingly compelling way to manage your long-term energy expenses.
